Students from Virginia State University who successfully complete the dual degree program will receive the following degree combination:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (VSU) and Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Life Science Engineering with a concentration in chemical engineering (VCU)
Pre-dual degree status
The purpose of the pre-dual degree status is to identify VSU students who are interested in the dual degree program before they have fulfilled coursework requirements and meet the admission criteria for dual degree status. The pre-dual degree status enables VSU students to begin interaction with VCU staff, faculty, and current students, thus allowing for acclimation and access to useful campus information and a smooth transition to the dual degree program.
Admission to the program is not guaranteed and is subject to the requirements set forth in the agreement between VSU and VCU. Students must consult with their VSU advisors to learn if any courses completed in a non-degree status would transfer back to VSU in the event that the student does not enroll into the program.
Dual degree status
Students who meet the following criteria will be guaranteed admission to the program at VCU. Students who do not meet all of the following criteria may still apply for admission to the program and will be evaluated on a competitive basis.
-
Cumulative Home Institution GPA of at least 3.0.
-
Cumulative VCU GPA of at least 3.0 (if applicable).
-
Completed the following courses or their equivalents at any institution with a grade of B (3.0) or better in each course: MATH 200, MATH 201, PHYS 207, CHEM 101, CHEZ 101
-
The average grade for the following courses or their equivalents at any institution, if attempted, must be at least 3.0: MATH 301, MATH 307, PHYS 208
All grade averages mentioned herein are computed from all coursework attempted at VSU, VCU and other institutions. For repeated coursework, grades for all attempts will be averaged.
The average grade for all attempted engineering and computer science courses, regardless of where they are taken, must be at least 3.0.
Once admitted to the program, students must meet with their advisors at VSU and VCU to review the proposed course of study, keeping in mind the timelines and requirements for each institution. Each institution is responsible for informing the students in the program of the courses available to meet degree requirements for the relevant academic programs identified in this agreement at that institution.
