The Department of Prosthodontics is dedicated to providing comprehensive prosthodontic care while advancing the specialty through excellence in teaching, research, community engagement and patient-centered clinical service. Faculty play a vital role in the education of predoctoral dental students by introducing the principles of prosthodontics early in the curriculum and guiding them through the development of strong didactic knowledge and clinical skills in fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics. Through preclinical laboratory training, simulation exercises and comprehensive patient care, students gain experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, occlusion, prosthesis fabrication and advanced clinical techniques. The department also provides advanced specialty training through its postgraduate prosthodontics residency program, preparing future specialists in fixed, removable, implant and maxillofacial prosthodontics. This is a 36-month program leading to a certificate in prosthodontics, a Master of Science in Dentistry, eligibility for examination by the American Board of Prosthodontics and has an initial accreditation status by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. In addition, faculty deliver exceptional patient care through the faculty practice of the VCU School of Dentistry, offering advanced treatment options for patients with complex restorative and rehabilitative needs.
