The Department of Craft and Material Studies explores the interdisciplinary language and study of ceramic, glass, wood, fiber and metals. The department offers both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Craft and Material Studies and a Master of Fine Arts in Fine Arts degree with concentrations in five disciplines: ceramics, fiber, furniture design, glassworking and jewelry/metalworking.
Students are encouraged and empowered to engage with craft through historical and contemporary discourse. They explore materials rooted in craft while pursuing a deep investigation of their practice and contemporary critical issues through fearless innovation and transformative creativity.
The department and five master’s concentration areas are housed in a state-of-the-art facility that provides both analog and digital equipment and resources. Students have access to well-equipped studios in which to cultivate their curiosity and stretch their practice within an immersive learning environment ranging from the traditional to the most experimental approaches in art-making. The department shares the facilities with the departments of Sculpture and Extended Media, Painting and Printmaking, and Kinetic Imaging.
