This is the preliminary (or launch) version of the 2025-2026 VCU Bulletin. Courses that expose students to cutting-edge content and transformative learning may be added and notification of additional program approvals may be received prior to finalization. General education program content is also subject to change. The final edition and full PDF version will include these updates and will be available in August prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
The minor in finance is designed to provide students from diverse disciplines with a foundational understanding of financial principles and practices. This minor will equip students with essential skills in financial analysis, investment strategies and corporate finance, preparing them to make informed financial decisions in both personal and professional contexts. By integrating core finance concepts with practical applications, the minor aims to enhance students' marketability and broaden their career opportunities across various industries.
For students majoring in other disciplines, a minor in finance can be particularly beneficial by complementing their primary field of study with financial acumen. Business students can gain deeper insights into corporate finance, while engineering and science majors can apply financial analysis to project management and entrepreneurship. Liberal arts majors can enhance their understanding of financial literacy, making them more competitive in roles that require budget management and strategic planning. Ultimately, the finance minor provides versatile skills that are valuable across a wide range of professions.
Finance majors pursuing a BS Finance degree are not eligible to complete this minor.
Note that MATH 200 or BUSN 212; ACCT 203 or ACCT 202 (for non-business majors); ECON 210, ECON 203 or ECON 205 with a minimum grade of B; and SCMA 301, STAT 210, STAT 212, STAT 312 or STAT 541 are prerequisites for some or all of the required courses for the minor. Some of the elective courses may also need prerequisite courses. Students should plan their courses to accommodate the necessary prerequisites for completing the minor.
